Facts about how body image affects mental health

Here it is, here are the cold-hard-facts on how negative feelings about body image can impact mental health. They haven’t been embellished for dramatic affect. But I’m sure you’ll agree these statistics speak for themselves.  

Mental Health Foundation

Research carried out by the Mental Health Foundation with YouGov in March 2019 of 4,505 UK adults 18+ and 1,118 GB teenagers (aged 13-19).

One in five UK adults have felt shame because of their body image in the last year.

19% felt disgusted because of their body image in the last year.

Among teenagers, 37% felt upset, and 31% felt ashamed in relation to their body image.

Just over one third of adults said they had ever felt anxious (34%) or depressed (35%) because of their body image.

Be Real Campaign

Conducted research from 2,189 young people aged between 11 and 24 years-old from across the UK.

Almost two-thirds of young people (61%) feel pressure to look their best online.

Less than a fifth of young people (16%) said that looking at social media positively affected how confident they felt about the way they look.

Survey of 1,479 14-24 year olds asked about five of the most popular social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Youtube.

Instagram was voted to have the most negative effect on young people’s mental health.

Nine in 10 teenage girls say they are unhappy with their body.

Around 70% of 18-24 year olds’ surveyed would consider having a cosmetic surgical procedure.
