It’s hard to ask for help… there I’ve said it. We’re scared to show our vulnerability to people, for fear of embarrassment, judgement and ridicule.
But one of the best lessons I have learned in the past two years, is that you have to let some people climb over the walls you’ve built up around yourself, because they can help you.
I’d like to share some of the best advice I have been given from the people who have inspired me to open up and not be so fearful of the future.
My hypnotherapist on feeling angry all the time and forgiveness… “Would you rather be right or happy?
My mum on mental health… “I wish I could put a bandage around your head to prove to you do have an illness”.
This was such a powerful thing to say because it gave me something to visualise.
My boyfriend on anxiety… “It’s just like a wave, you have to ride it out you always make it back to the shore.”
My friend on insomnia… “I find yoga helps me sleep better”.
My Grandma on dealing with negative people… “When you’re around people who you feel zap your positive energy, imagine yourself surrounded by mirrors, their negativity will reflect back on them.”
My therapist on feeling guilty… “Don’t follow the things you think you should do, follow the things you want to do.”
My Dad discussing my future… “Put your sunglasses on baby because your future is bright.”
To some people, this statement might sound cheesy, but I’ll tell you why it meant a lot to me. Me and my dad don’t discuss our feelings, we find it hard to have these kinds of conversations. A few days after I told my dad I was feeling suicidal, he said that to me. It meant a lot because, I knew he had been thinking about what to say to me. It gave me hope through my darkest days.
My friend on depression… “You’re not alone, I’ve felt like that too.”
