“Fall in love with taking care of yourself”
When you are suffering with your mental health, days like Valentines Day can sometimes amplify feelings of low self-worth and loneliness. And as lovely and well-meaning as the day is, it can sometimes feel hard not to compare yourself to others – especially if you are single or you have lost a loved one. There are constant reminders in the shops and on social media which can make you bad, even if previously you had been feeling OK.
However this isn’t exclusive to people who are single, even being in a relationship can cause stress. Your loved one might not be around for you to celebrate with or you might have certain expectations of the day and the reality might not live up to this.
So basically, there are plenty of reasons that Valentine’s Day may get you down. But I don’t want to focus on this, I’d rather concentrate positive ways you can try to turn your mindset around and make today better for yourself.
Journal
Write down things you are grateful for. This will help you focus on all the things you love about your life, instead of focusing on the things you don’t have. I like to do this every week, you can read my latest list here.
If you’d like even more tips on writing a journal I wrote a post here.
Home pamper session
I absolutely LOVE having the time to take a nice hot bath, with a lovely smelling bath bomb from Lush, and a doing face mask. I usually include these on my self care Sunday lists because they are tried and tested and I love it, so hopefully you will too!
Favourite meal
Today is the day to treat yourself so order your favorite takeaway, or cook your favorite meal – and don’t feel guilty about it!
Hang out with friends/ family
Just because you may not have a significant other in your life, does not mean that there aren’t people in your life that love you – so focus on these people. Why not organise a date with some of your friends? Or have a night in with a film with some of your family? The possibilities are endless here.
New Look
Book in to get a new haircut or your nails done. I love getting a new haircut it makes me feel fresh and confident.
I hope some of these suggestions might help you today. What do you like to do to practise self care? Please let me know in the comments below.
